Part One

Scene 1 (complete silence)

Ext. Outside the city

(Show the city from the sky, a large a prosperous place, the sky is clear blue, and the ground is green, with a few roads leading into the city.)

(A flash of light, the city is in ruins. Skeletons of buildings and rubble are all that’s left. The sky is red, and the ground is black)

 

Ext. Inside the city.

            (The city is nice again, people are gathered around a center square, CRANE stands outside the circle. It’s completely silent, and remains so.)

            (CRANE looks down at his shoe, a small stream of black oil is going past it. CRANE looks up, to see where the oil comes from. He follows the stream)

            (He comes upon a dead Mek, oil leaking from numerous bullet wounds in the body, CRANE is looking at the Mek, there is a faint red glow all around CRANE, coming from the eyes of Meks around him. CRANE notices a stream of red blood mingling with the black. He follows it)

            (He pushes through a much larger crowd of humans, in the center lies a bleeding body with a MAN standing over it. CRANE sees the body is his, and he starts running towards it. The MAN points a gun at the body, and shoots.)

 

Scene 2 (4/5/56)

Int. Cranes room.

            (CRANE sits straight up in his bed, covered in a cold sweet, and breathing heavily. He looks around, realizes he’s in his room, and falls back down on the bed. He looks to the right, at a digital clock. Red lights flash 4:20. He sighs, and gets out of bed.)

 

Int. The kitchen.

            (CRANE is sitting at the table, drinking a cup of coffee, reading a newspad, a small square, which displays the news. The newspad is dated April 5, 2056. The headline reads: “Third Mek Lynched By Mob.” CRANE reads the pad, talking to himself under his breath)

Crane

(Under breath)

Fucking Antimeks… just leave them the hell alone.

 

(CRANE looks up at the clock, which says: 7:30. He finishes the coffee, grabs his backpack, and walks out the door.)

 

Scene 3

Ext. the sidewalk          

(CRANE is walking down the sidewalk, heading for school. BACE runs up)

Bace

Hey Nik!

 

            (CRANE is obviously irritated)

Crane

What have I told you about calling me that?

Bace

Well, that your name isn’t it? Nikolas Crane?

Crane

Yes, Bace, it is. But when, in the 6 years of our friendship, have I ever let you call me that?

Bace

Fine, Crane. (Exaggerated sigh) So what’s new?

Crane

Nothing, besides these fucking Mek lynchings.

Bace

You said fuck, you must be angry.

Crane

They piss me off!

Bace

I can tell.

Crane

I don’t see why they get so much pleasure out of killing what they don’t believe to be alive.

Bace

Huh. Never thought of that…

Crane

Yea, I know.

Bace

What’s that supposed to mean?

Crane

Nothing, nothing.

Bace

Yea, I’m sure.

(They arrive at the school)

Crane

Hey man, I gotta find Seara, something’s wrong with her.

Bace

Okay, whatever. Just use protection.

(CRANE laughs and walks into school)

 

Scene 4

Int. The school- Seara’s locker

            (SEARA is standing at her locker, after removing a book, she closes it. CRANE stands behind the locker door.)

Crane

Hey cutie.

            (CRANE kisses her)

Seara

Hey.

            (CRANE looks at her)

 

Crane

What's wrong?

Seara

Nothing.

Crane

I can tell when something’s wrong.

Seara

(Sighs)

It’s nothing, Crane.

            (CRANE just looks at her for a second)

Crane

Are you sure you don’t wanna talk about it?

Seara

Yea

Crane

(He touches her cheek; she puts her hand on his)

When you want too…

Seara

I know.

            (He hugs her)

Crane

Why are you so damn beautiful?

            (SEARA smiles and hugs CRANE tighter)

            (The bell rings, they let go of each other)

Crane

You’re gonna be late.

Seara

So are you.

            (They kiss, and then go to their respective classes)

 

Scene 5

Int. Recent History Class

            (CRANE sits in his desk, his cheek resting on his fist, the teacher, MR. ANDERSON, stands at the head of the class)

Mr. Anderson

Ok, who can tell me what year Dr. Alfred Lanning first showed the world robots?

            (Numerous hands go up around the room)

Mr. Anderson

Yes, Donnie?

Donnie

(All the hands around the room go down)

It was 2011.

Mr. Anderson

Correct, after that, Trevor Goodchild improved upon the formula, and in the year 2019, created an organic robot. What was this robots name?

            (Hands go up again)

Mr. Anderson

Smith?

Smith

(Hands go down)

It was called 01, Mr. Anderson

Mr. Anderson

Correct. 01, the first Mek, named for its furthest roots, the binary code. All of mankind marveled at Trevor Goodchild’s creation. He had created a sentient life. A fusion of man and machine, that could even grow and think for itself. We thought we were gods. Can anyone tell me how to tell a Mek from a human? Mr. Draven?

            (The person next to CRANE starts, he looks up)

Erik Draven

Um, it’s in the eyes, they glow red.

Mr. Anderson

Thank you, Erik. It wasn’t long before Mek’s had started to be hated, by people who began calling themselves Antimeks. And of course, those who helped the Meks were known as Promeks. Anyway, the Antimeks saw the truth, that Meks were nothing but a lifeless moving pile of metallic garbage, and began to kill them. Still today, the great art of Mek Lynching takes place.

            (CRANE looks up, raises his hand)

Mr. Anderson

Yes, Crane?

Crane

(Puts his hand down)

Tell me, how can the Antimeks kill what they believe to be lifeless?

            (MR. ANDERSON stares at CRANE)

Mr. Anderson

Are you trying to disturb my class, Nikolas?

            (CRANE’S eye twitches)

Crane

No, Thomas, I’m simply trying to make a point.

            (MR. ANDERSON pauses)

Mr. Anderson

I will not have your Promek drivel in my classroom.

Crane

How much do you actually know about Meks?

Mr. Anderson

Nikolas Crane, you are out of li-

Crane

Did you know they have their own myths? And that they believe that someday the Meks will take over the world and wipe out all Antimeks?

            (The bell rings)

Crane

Some food for thought.

            (MR. ANDERSON sits down in his chair, staring at CRANE as he gathers his

things and leaves)

 

Scene 6

Int. Crane’s house- living room

(CRANE is sitting on the couch, watching TV)

Television

Now we return to Oldies Week, with V For Vendetta.

            (V For Vendetta comes on screen, CRANE watches, and then someone knocks at the door)

            (CRANE stands up, and walks to the door, he opens it.)

            (Standing there is ROB OTMAN, his eyes are glowing a faint red)

Crane

Yea?

Rob

(In a monotonous voice)

Hello, my name is Robert Otman, I have recently moved in next door to you, and wish to make your acquaintance.

Crane

Oh, well, my name’s Crane.

Rob

It is nice to meet you, Crane.

            (CRANE stands there, staring at ROB, trying to figure out what’s different about him)

Crane

Um, do you wanna come inside?

            (CRANE walks inside, and ROB follows him. CRANE sits back down on the couch, ROB stands)

Crane

Sit.

            (ROB sits down on the couch, staring unblinkingly at the TV)

            (CRANE studies ROB, after a few seconds, a look of realization comes across his face)

Crane

You’re a Mek!

            (ROB turns towards CRANE)

Rob

Yes, you are also, correct?

Crane

(Laughs)

No, I’m a human, just like everyone else in this part of the city.

            (ROB pauses)

Rob

Is it bad that I am a Mek?

Crane

Unless you’re suicidal, and I’ve never heard of a suicidal Mek.

Rob

Why would I have to be “suicidal?”

            (CRANE turns towards ROB)

Crane

(Seriously)

Because, Rob, they will kill you. They will tear you to pieces, find all of your key parts, and rip them out, and then they will burn you. And after that, they will amaze at their kill, thinking they have done the world good.

            (ROB pauses)

Rob

Will you do these things?

Crane

No (beat) I am one of the few here who won’t.

Rob

Oh.

(They both turn back to the TV)

 

Scene 7 (4/6/56)

Int. Crane’s room

            (An alarm goes off, and CRANE gets out of bed)

Int. The kitchen

            (CRANE is reading the newspad while eating a bowl of cereal. The newspad is dated April 6, 2056. The headline reads: “Mek Lynchings Continue.” CRANE shakes his head, stands up, grabs his backpack, and leaves.)

 

Scene 8

Int. The school-Seara’s locker

            (CRANE is leaning against a locker; SEARA walks up and goes into the locker next to it)

            (CRANE pushes himself off the locker, and faces SEARA)

Crane

You know it drives me crazy when something’s bothering you.

Seara

(Looks at the floor)

Yea, I know.

(CRANE touches SEARA’S chin, bringing her head up, he kisses her)

Crane

You wanna talk about it?

            (SEARA looks at CRANE)

Seara

(Almost crying)

He’s just being so (beat) horrible!

Crane

Who?

Seara

My father!

            (SEARA buries her head in CRANE’s chest and starts to cry; he puts his arms around her)

 

Seara

(Tearfully)

He wants me to break up with you! But I can’t!

Crane

(Pauses)

Seara, if I’m making your life miserable, then break up with me. All I want is for you to be happy.

Seara

(Shakes head, she has stopped crying)

No!

Crane

Seara-

Seara

No!

            (CRANE and SEARA stand there, in each other’s arms for a second)

            (CRANE kisses the top of Seara’s head)

Crane

Seara?

Seara

Hm?

Crane

I love you.

            (SEARA looks up at CRANE, kisses him)

Seara

I love you too.

 

Scene 9

Int. Crane’s house- living room

            (CRANE and ROB are sitting on the couch; the TV is on but neither one of them are paying it any attention)

Crane

So, do you go to a human school?

Rob

I start school tomorrow.

Crane

Oh, so, do you ever wear sunglasses in public?

Rob

 Why would I do that?

Crane

People aren't very accepting of Mek’s around here.

 

Rob

I have yet to have a problem with that.

            (CRANE stares at ROB doubtfully)

Crane

All right.

            (CRANE’S PARENTS walk in)

Crane

Oh, Mom and Dad, I got someone here I want you to meet.

            (ROB stands up and walks towards CRANE’S PARENTS, his hand outstretched)

Crane

His name’s Rob Otman.

Rob

It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. and Mrs. Crane.

            (MR. CRANE shakes ROB’S hand)

Mr. Crane

Good to me-

            (MR. CRANE pulls his hand away sharply, a look of pure disgust on his face)

Mrs. Crane

What’s wrong?

Mr. Crane

He’s a Mek! A filthy, oil-ridden Mek!

            (MR. CRANE walks over to the door and throws it open)

Mr. Crane

(Roaring)

GET THE HELL OUT OF MY HOUSE!

            (ROB is shocked, but leaves calmly)

            (MR. CRANE slams the door shut after him, and turns to CRANE)

Mr. Crane

You! Did you know what he was!?

Crane

Yes, yes I did.

            (MR. CRANE stamps over to where CRANE is; he grabs CRANE by the shirt collar)

Mr. Crane

(With restrained rage)

Get. Out.

            (MR. CRANE lets go of CRANE roughly, CRANE stumbles a bit. He shrugs his shoulders, and walks out the door)

 

Scene 10

Ext. Outside Bace’s house

            (CRANE knocks on BACE’S door, after a few seconds, BACE opens it)

Bace

Hey man, what’s up?

Crane

Got kicked out.

Bace

Again?

Crane

What the hell are you talking about? The last time I ran away.

Bace

Ah. Come in then.

           

Int. Bace’s house

(BACE walks in; CRANE follows, shutting the door behind him. The Offspring are playing in the background)

Crane

Got a thing for the oldies?

Bace

Hell yes.

            (They walk through the house, CRANE waves at BACE’S OLDER SISTER in her room, she waves back, they go to BACE’S room, and turn up the music)

 

Int. Bace’s room

            (CRANE and BACE sit in BACE’S room, listening to music. BACE leans back in his chair)

Bace

So, you gonna stay here?

Crane

Preferably, better than the park, less chance of anal rape. (Beat) On second thought…

Bace

Hey.

            (CRANE laughs)

Bace

You can stay here man, but only until my mom comes home at the end of the week.

Crane

Thanks, man.

 

Scene 11 (4/7/56)

Int. The School- Seara’s locker

            (CRANE is walking down the hall, looking for SEARA. He finds her at her locker; he walks up and hugs her from behind)

Crane

Hey.

Seara

Hey.

Crane

What's new?

Seara

Nothing, what’s new with you?

Crane

Got kicked out.

            (SEARA turns around to face CRANE, she is stunned)

Seara

What?

Crane

I got kicked out of my house.

Seara

Oh my god, why?

Crane

Because I made friends with a Mek.

Seara

Well, Crane. Your parent are like, the biggest Antimeks in the city, you have to stop antagonizing them!

Crane

Whose side are you on?

            (SEARA looks at the floor, then looks up, and hugs CRANE, putting her head in his chest)

Seara

Are you gonna be all right?

Crane

Yea.

Seara

Where are you staying?

Crane

Bace’s

            (SEARA is silent for a few seconds)

Seara

Go back home soon, okay?

            (CRANE hugs her tighter)

Crane

Okay.

 

Scene 12

Int. The school- hallway

            (ROB is in the hall, three JERKS are around him, circling him, threatening him)

Jerk 1

So, some Mek thinks he can come to our school eh?

Jerk 2

Looks like it.

Jerk 1

We don’t take too kindly to Mek’s here, do we?

Jerk 2 and 3

Nope

            (The JERKS stop circling)

Jerk 1

I suppose we’ll just have to teach him lesson, won’t we?

            (JERK 1 punches ROB in the face; the JERKS start beating him up)

            (CRANE runs up)

Crane

Hey, hey!

            (The JERKS stop beating ROB and turn to face CRANE)

Crane

The hell you guys picking on the new kid for?

Jerk 1

He’s a fucking Mek!

Crane

You’re a douche, but I’m not beating on you for it.

            (JERK 1 walks up to CRANE, he gets really close, and spits in CRANE’S face)

Jerk 1

Fuck you, Promek.

            (JERK 1 turns around, and walks away; JERK 2 and JERK 3 follow him. CRANE wipes the spit off his face, then looks at ROB)

Crane

Are you okay?

Rob

Yes.

Crane

Good.

            (Pause)

Rob

Thank you

Crane

Don’t mention it, those guys are shitheads anyway.

Rob

Would they have killed me?

Crane

I doubt it. They would say they were gonna, but they wouldn’t.

Rob

Oh.

Crane

Come on; let’s get to class.

            (CRANE and ROB walk down the hall the opposite way the JERKS went)

 

Scene 13

Ext. Outside the School

            (BACE and CRANE are walking down the sidewalk outside the school)

Crane

Hey, I need some stuff from my house, are you gonna come with me?

Bace

Yea, sure, whatever.

            (They walk along)

Crane

Shit, I forgot my key when I left.

Bace

How you gonna get in then?

Crane

Um, there’s a spare in the garage, I’ll grab that.

Ext. Outside of Crane’s house

            (BACE is standing outside of Crane’s house. CRANE comes running from the side, where the garage is)

Crane

They moved the goddamn key!

Bace

Shit, how we gonna get in?

            (CRANE thinks for a second)

Crane

I think (beat) we have to break in.

Bace

(Nodding his head)

Cool.

            (CRANE and BACE run around to the back of the house)

            (CRANE starts trying to open a window, he succeeds, but can’t open the screen on the other side. He turns towards BACE)

Crane

I can’t open the screen.

Bace

Then break it!

            (CRANE breaks the screen, and then crawls in the window; BACE is waiting outside for him)

 

Int. Crane’s house- parents room

            (CRANE is inside his parents room, he walks over to the door. He grabs the doorknob, but when he does, and alarm goes off. CRANE runs back to the window and crawls out)

 

Ext. Outside Crane’s house- backyard

            (After CRANE gets out, him and BACE run)

 

Ext. Outside Bace’s house

            (CRANE and BACE ran to Bace’s house, they’re standing outside of it, catching their breath, CRANE is bent over, his hands on his knees, and BACE is leaning against the house)

Bace

Dude, we need to go back, I bet you’re gonna need that stuff.

Crane

(Looks up at BACE)

I’m not going back there!

Bace

We’ll just tell the police we set off the alarm by accident, freaked, and ran!

Crane

My dad will prosecute!

Bace

His own son?

Crane

Especially his own son!

Bace

(Pauses)

Right.

            (CRANE and BACE stand there for a second, CRANE starts to laugh)

Bace

What's so funny?

Crane

(Laughing)

That was just so damn scary!

            (BACE stares at CRANE for a second, then he starts laughing too)

Bace

(Laughing)

Yea, c’mon.

            (BACE walks in his house, and CRANE follows)

 

Scene 14 (4/10/56)

Int. Crane’s house- front hallway

            (Show the door, someone is knocking on it. MR. CRANE walks up to it, and opens it. CRANE is standing on the other side)

Crane

(Very sarcastic)

Hey there, Pops. Is four days long enough for you?

Mr. Crane

Why the hell are you back here?

Crane

It’s not because I missed you. I’ll tell you that much.

Mr. Crane

Then why?

Crane

Cause all my stuffs here, and it’s unfair to Bace for me to stay there.

Mr. Crane

(Pauses)

Come in then.

            (CRANE walks in, MR. CRANE closes the door. CRANE starts heading for his room, then he stops and turns around)

Crane

Hey, Dad.

Mr. Crane

What?

 

Crane

Even though you let me back in (beat) I still fucking hate you.

            (MR. CRANE just stands there, CRANE goes to his room)

Scene 15

Int. Crane’s house- front hallway, a few hours later

            (Show the door, someone is knocking on it. MR. CRANE walks to it, and opens it. Standing on the other side is ROB)

Rob

Hello, Mr. Crane, I have a question for Crane, if I could see him?

Mr. Crane

No.

Rob

But sir-

            (MR. CRANE shuts the door in ROB’S face)

 

Scene 16 (4/12/56)

Int. Crane’s house- living room

            (CRANE is sitting on the couch, on the phone with SEARA)

Crane

Well, what’s the date? (Beat) The twelfth? (Beat) Huh, I thought it was the eleventh. Anyway, I came home on the tenth, so I’ve been back for two days.

            (Someone knocks on the door)

Crane

Um, hang on, theres someone at the door.

            (CRANE walks over at opens the door, ROB is standing there. He is severely beaten, with a flap of skin missing from the left half of his face, a metal skull shows underneath)

            (CRANE raises the phone to his ear, stunned)

Crane

Um, can I call you back? (Beat) Love you too (Beat) bye.

            (CRANE turns the phone off)

Crane

Rob, what the hell happened to you?

Rob

They found me

Crane

Who?

Rob

The guys from school. The ones who said they were going to kill me, but weren’t.

Crane

Fuck, they did this?

Rob

Yes.

Crane

Fuck. (Beat) Where the hell is the other side of your face? (ROB reaches into his pocket, and brings out the missing side of his face) Fuck, (beat) come in then.

            (ROB walks in, CRANE closes the door)

Rob

Will your parents disapprove of this?

Crane

Yes, fuck them. C’mon.

            (CRANE walks ROB into the living room and makes him sit on the couch. CRANE walks into the bathroom, and walks out carrying a tube)

Crane

This is Quickheal lotion, hurts like hell for people, but I don’t know about you.

            (CRANE sits on the couch next to ROB)

Crane

Okay, hand me the piece of your face.

(ROB takes out the piece of face and hands it to CRANE. He puts it into place on Rob’s face, and rubs the open end of the tube along the edges. It bubbles for a second, and then the face is connected)

Crane

Are you hurt anywhere else?

            (ROB points to a huge gash going from his elbow to midway up his palm on the left arm. CRANE puts more of the Quickheal lotion on it, ROB then points out the bottom three ribs on his right side, which CRANE fixes)

Crane

Is that all?

Rob

Yes.

Crane

Good.

            (CRANE stands up and puts the Quickheal lotion back, he walks back out)

Crane

Hey man, I’m sorry, but my parents are gonna be home soon, and I don’t particularly want to be kicked out again. So…

            (ROB stands up and walks towards the door. When he’s at the door, he turns to CRANE)

Rob

Thank you, Crane.

Crane

Don’t mention it.

Rob

You have saved me twice at your own risk. Why?

Crane

Because I can.

Rob

You have my gratitude, then.

            (ROB turns away from CRANE and walks out, shutting the door behind him)

 

Scene 17 (4/15/56)

Ext. Outside the school

            (CRANE and SEARA are walking down the sidewalk, holding hands)

Ext. Outside Seara’s house

            (CRANE and SEARA walk up to Seara’s front porch, then stop)

Crane

Well, we’re here.

Seara

Yea…

Crane

I suppose, I’m going home now. Love you.

            (CRANE walks off the porch)

Seara

Crane!

            (CRANE stops and turns around)

Crane

Yea?

Seara

My dad isn’t home; do you wanna (beat) would you like to come in?

            (CRANE walks back towards SEARA, they walk in her house)

 

Int. Seara’s house- Seara’s room

            (CRANE and SEARA are sitting on her bed. In each other’s arms)

            (They start kissing, then, they start making out)

            (MR. WRIGHT walks in; CRANE and SEARA scramble to get off each other)

Mr. Wright

What the hell are you doing?

Crane

Um, hello, Mr. Wright.

Mr. Wright

You, you’re the Promek, aren't you?

Crane

Um, yes.

Mr. Wright

Get the hell out of my house.

Seara

Daddy-

Mr. Wright

No! I want this Promek shit out of my house!

            (CRANE stands up, he looks at SEARA)

Crane

Sorry, Seara.

            (CRANE walks out)

 

Scene 18 (4/16/56)

Int. Crane’s house- Crane’s room

            (CRANE and BACE are sitting in Crane’s room, playing video games. BACE wins)

Bace

Ha!

            (CRANE does nothing except for stare at the floor)

Bace

Hey man, it was just a game, no reason to get so down.

            (CRANE looks up at BACE)

Crane

That’s not it.

Bace

What's wrong then?

            (Long pause)

Crane

I think Seara is gonna break up with me.

Bace

Why?

Crane

Because, (beat) her dads being a dick.

Bace

Oh? How so?

Crane

He’s just (beat) being an ass about me. And I think Seara is gonna give in and break up with me.

Bace

That sucks…

Crane

I just want her to be happy, you know? And if I’m making her unhappy (beat) then she should break up with me. (beat) but still.

            (CRANE turns back to the screen)

Crane

Forget it; let’s play some Smash Brothers.

            (CRANE and BACE start playing again)

 

Scene 19 (4/18/56)

Int. Seara’s house- Seara’s room

            (SEARA is on the phone with CRANE)

Seara

You can never remember the date! (Beat) Um, it’s the eighteenth.

Mr. Wright

(Calling from the other room)

Seara!

Seara

(Sighs)

I’m sorry; I gotta go, the assholes calling me. (beat) I love you. (Beat) Bye.

            (SEARA hangs up the phone and walks out of her room)

Int. Seara’s house- Living room

 

Seara

What?

Mr. Wright

What were you doing?

Seara

Talking on the phone.

Mr. Wright

To who?

Seara

To Crane.

Mr. Wright

I should have known.

            (SEARA rolls her eyes and walks back into her room)

 

Int. Seara’s house- Seara’s room

            (MR. WRIGHT is standing in the door)

Mr. Wright

I don’t understand why you want to go out with scum like him.

Seara

Because, Dad, he’s not scum.

Mr. Wright

He’s Promek.

Seara

So? He can accept differences.

Mr. Wright

He’s just going to get you in trouble.

Seara

He’s a wonderful person.

Mr. Wright

No, he isn’t.

Seara

Yes, he is.

Mr. Wright

He’s just a filthy Promek! How can he be wonderful?!

Seara

At least he listens to me!

Mr. Wright

I listen to you…

Seara

No you don’t! You just be an ass until you get your own way!

            (MR. WRIGHT is silent for a moment)

Mr. Wright

How about, if you break up with him, I will listen to every single thing you have to say.

Seara

I’m not breaking up with him!

 

Mr. Wright

(Bellowing)

FINE THEN! STAY IN THIS ROOM UNTIL YOU DO YOU LITTLE FUCKING WHORE!!!

            (MR. WRIGHT slams the door closed. SEARA buries her head in her pillow and cries)

 

Scene 20 (4/20/56)

            Int. Crane’s house- Kitchen 8:00

            (CRANE is sitting on the table, reading the newspad; the date on the top says April 20, 2056. The headline reads: Fifth Mek Lynching Yesterday)

            (As CRANE is reading, the phone rings, CRANE picks it up)

Crane

Hello? (Beat) Hey. (Beat) The park? Why? (Beat) Okay. I’ll see you there. (Beat) Love you too. Bye.

            (CRANE hangs up; he puts the newspad down and walks out the door)

 

Ext. The Park 8:20

                        (SEARA is sitting at a bench in the park. CRANE walks up, before he can get to the bench, SEARA runs up and hugs him)

Seara

Crane, I’m so sorry.

Crane

Why?

Seara

I can’t stand it anymore!

Crane

Can’t stand what?

Seara

My father!

            (CRANE pauses, lets go of SEARA)

Crane

What?

Seara

I can’t stand my father! And I’m afraid he’s going to do something horrible.

Crane

So, you want…

Seara

I think we should break up.

            (CRANE puts his head down, as he doesn’t want SEARA to see him cry)

Crane

Okay…

Seara

I’m sorry, Crane.

            (SEARA kisses CRANE’S cheek)

 

Seara

I still love you.

            (SEARA leaves. A single tear rolls down CRANE’S cheek, and lands on the ground)

            (CRANE sits on the bench and puts his head in his hands. After a few moments, he stands up again and begins walking back the way he came)

 

Scene 21

            Ext. Inside the city.

            (CRANE is walking down the sidewalk. As he walks, he notices more and more people are showing up. Until he comes across a huge group of people, all gathered around a central area)

            (CRANE walks up to a PERSON in the crowd)

Crane

What’s going on?

Person

Some Mek thought it could live here, they’re gonna kill it.

Crane

Fuck.

            (CRANE starts pushing his way through the crowd. When he gets to the front, he sees ROB standing on a platform, tied up)

Crane

Rob?!

Rob

Hello, Crane.

            (CRANE climbs onto the platform and begins to untie the ropes)

Crane

What the hell are you doing here?

Rob

They brought me here.

Crane

Fuck.

Rob

You’ve been crying, Crane.

Crane

(Pauses)

It’s nothing.

            (CRANE gets ROB untied)

Crane

There, c’mon.

            (CRANE and ROB start walking towards the end of the platform. An ANTIMEK walks out of the crowd)

Antimek

What the hell do you think you’re doing?

Crane

I’m saving a life.

Antimek

You’re saving a Mek

Crane

I know.

Antimek

(He looks around)

Look kid, what do you want? Attention, money, what?

Crane

I only want what is right.

Antimek

But this is right!

Crane

(Furiously)

No! This is not right! Just because we gave him life does not mean we are allowed to take it away! He is human, except so much better! And you people see this and hate him for it! He is pure and incorrupt and yet you still hate him! Why do you hate those who can beat us?  They defeat us, but they don’t brag about it, like you would! They simply accept it, and move on, and they expect you to accept it too! WHY DO YOU HATE THEM?!?

            (A MAN steps out the crowd, we can’t see his face)

Man

So you prefer Mek’s over humans do you?

Crane

Yes.

Man

What about my daughter? You don’t seem to prefer Mek’s over her.

Crane

What?

            (We can see the MAN’S face now)

Mr. Wright

You stole my daughter from me!

Crane

Mr. Wright?

Mr. Wright

Yea! And my daughter prefers a Mek-loving shit like you over her own father! You deserve to die!

            (MR. WRIGHT pulls out a gun and points it at CRANE. CRANE jumps to the side, the bullet hits ROB. ROB looks down at where he was hit, and looks up again. MR. WRIGHT shoots him in the face, and ROB falls to the ground, dead.)

            (CRANE scrambles up and runs, MR. WRIGHT shoots, and hits CRANE in the bottom three ribs on the right side. CRANE falls, after much effort he manages to turn onto his back. MR. WRIGHT is standing above CRANE)

Mr. Wright

She loves you (he shoots CRANE’S left hand) more than she loves me. (He shoots CRANE’S left elbow) and you love Mek’s (he shoots CRANE’S left bicep) more than you love her. (He shoots CRANE’S left shoulder) I hate you. Now, die.

            (MR. WRIGHT raises the gun and points it at the left side of CRANE’S face as SEARA runs out the crowd)

Seara

(Running towards her father)

No!

            (MR. WRIGHT shoots, CRANE dies .MR WRIGHT walks into the crowd, people pat him on the back and praise him)

            (SEARA runs up, and bends down to CRANE. She holds him for a few moments, crying. BACE walks up and puts his hand on SEARA’S shoulder. She stands up and they walk away, SEARA is still crying)

            (Show CRANE’S right eye. It’s open for a moment, then closes)
